Belated Thoughts on Game #38: a Win is a Win

Oh man that felt good…  a 107-100 WIN (!) against the Houston Rockets!

Yes, the Rockets were playing their 4th game in 5 nights. Yes they struggle to defend even when rested. But with the Sixers losing 5 games in a row, 3 consecutive by 20+ points, and topping it off with a 18 point loss to the last place Toronto Raptors, but Hell, I would have taken a win over the Upper Dublin Girls Varsity squad…

The Sixers lawnmower offense breaks 100 points for the first time since their January 1st win against the Lakers, and just the 2nd time since there Dec 19th loss to Rockets. Point being, the Sixers don’t score 100 points very often and Thank God for the Houston Rockets defense.

Jrue holiday sweaty happy

The Sixers decided to do more shouting and sweating in this game (though Omer Asik seemed to get a little tired of Thaddues Young screaming at him after every successfull box-out). Good for them. We can finally put to bed the rumors that the Sixers malaise was the result of a Tse-Tse fly outbreak at the Sixers PCOM practice facility..

Thad hype vs rockets

First the first time in a while, let’s get to…

THE GOOD:

1) Well here’s four minutes of Jrue Holiday getting into the paint at will en route to 30pts/9asts/4stls.

(Of particular note in this mix is Evan Turner finally figuring out how to use gigantic forehead in a game situation at the 31 second mark, and Holiday driving FOR CONTACT at the 3:04 mark.)

Evan Turner sad

2) Thad finds his groove. After showing signs that all the minutes and pounding as starting 4 were wearing him down, he comes with a true Burning Spear performance. Going for 18pts/12rebs/3asts. Including a full court bullet pass for a Jason Richardson dunk in the 1st (26 second mark)

3) Sixers shot chart. In continued doppleganger play, to beat the Rockets, the Sixers must become the Rockets, attacking the paint, taking corner 3’s and getting out in transition.

Sixers take 60 of their 87 shots (69%) within 15 feet, or from the 3 point corners. They convert 60% of thier shots within, 15, 55% of the short 3’s, and nearly double their (pathetic) season average with 24 fast break points.

That was a nice. Of course, i fully expect us to go back to a grinding defense, no offense style when we play the Hornets tomorrow…

4) Nobody else screwed it up. Carried by Jrue and Thad, everyone was totally OK enough to win a basketball game. Jason Richardson’s zombie found 16 points, and Turner produced a respectable 12pts/7/rebs/6asts.

THE BAD:

1) Sixers defense, well, it looked like the Sixers defense. if not for the flaming bag of poo provided by Jeremy Lin (7points on 2 for 13 shooting) this probably isn’t a win…

Chandler Parsons and Asik punish the Sixers at the rim (a combined 39 points), combined with the usual virtuoso rim attacks of James Harden…

Whoa, that was close Spence! you almost didn’t get out of the way in time…

THE UGLY: Nick Young goes cornrows! or maybe it’s french braids… in any event visual evidence of this lacking since Young recieved a DNP Coaches Decision, and was glued to the bench. Signaling that Doug might finally be tiring of Swaggy’s aimless play.

getting his minutes were the scrappy and talentless pair of Damien Wilkins and Royale Ivey. This doesn’t seem like a permanent solution, but happy belated birthday Damien…

Next up for the Sixers, Tuesday night vs. the lowly New Orleans Hornets, and this guy...

based on this image, and this image alone, I’m predicting a Sixers victory. 2 game win streak, you heard it here first….
